Two words to describe R&B/Pop artist Elle Marchelle: dedicated and persistent. From her years of training and performing, Marchelle is now able to share her talent with her fans through her music, personality, and experiences. This D.C. Pop Princess has a passion for music and a great appreciation for her fans. She has a new album–released in November and has two nominations for her hit single “Around You.” Recently I talked to Elle Marchelle about her debut album, award nominations, and future goals.
Lawanda Johnson: How are you today? Let’s talk about some events that you have lined up.
Elle Marchelle: “I’m doing good, tired, but I’m up! (laughs)…Well right now, I am finishing up my album. I plan on releasing it on November 11th of this year. I’ve been blessed to receive two nominations for my hit single “Around You.” One nomination is for a LSS Award [Love from the Sound Stage Awards] for Best Upcoming Female Artist. The second one is for a HMMA Award for Best Pop Single. The HMMA Awards [Hollywood Music and Media Awards] is basically like a Grammy show for independent artists. So I’m really excited about that! We have a crazy, crazy promotional campaign going on for the single and the album right now. It has been put together by my manager, Steve Starr. I have a lot of support from my mom, who is a part of my management as well.”
LJ: That’s cool. Congrats on your nominations as well! So who are some of your musical influences?
EM: “One of my favorite artists is Sade. I love listening to her. I actually got a chance to see her in concert when she came to D.C. It was absolutely amazing. It was the most amazing concert I’ve ever seen. Some of my other influences that I grew up on are Toni Braxton, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston and Anita Baker as well. That is just to name a few.”
LJ: Most of those artists have been coined as Divas. Do you consider yourself a Diva? The more positive connotation of the word, such as being a successful and glamorous female performer.
EM: “Of course. I feel like I am [a Diva] given my time and energy in this music industry. I can prove myself as worthy just as much as they have.”
LJ: Let’s talk about your new album set to be released in November. What can fans expect from this album?
EM: “The fans can expect something different from this album. I’m showing more of my personality on this one. It’s going to be a personal show put into an album. I want my fans to feel like I’m there with them and definitely being on a more personal level with my fans. I want to have a connection with them. I like to keep my music well-rounded. So, this album will be for everyone to listen to; it’s not just for the pop fans or the R&B fans or the hip-hop fans, but for everyone. Sometimes, I think some artists tend to forget about their fans because that’s what fans are looking for: a connection. That’s exactly what I’m trying to shoot for. I’m really excited and looking forward to everything right now.”
LJ: That sounds great! What’s next for you? You have the new album and the award shows coming up. Do you have any other new projects?
EM: “Well, we are trying to expand our music into a major independent label. I am really into that right now because I want to be able to support other artists. These artists do not have to be in D.C., they can be from all over. We are just trying to reach out to other artists and let them know that anything is possible when you put your mind to it. So, of course, I want to be involved in other business ventures such as clothing lines. My main focus right now is to successfully release music and to continue to have a connection with my fans.”
LJ: That’s awesome; you are definitely on the right track with that. Good luck to you. Congrats on all of your success!
EM: “Thank you. I have been singing since I was a little girl and it makes me feel good to be able to share my talents with everyone else. I totally appreciate you reaching out.”
