2012 was the year that had some of the best catchy poppy songs that we have ever heard. Just think of it as the year of “Call Me Maybe!”
As of late, MTV Music Single Toppers List has many trendy songs that were nominated by the general public. Out of those hit singles, some of the more popular artists were among the first twenty selected. Talented artists like Flo Rida, Maroon 5, Taylor Swift, Rihanna, and Katy Perry made the cut. The current selection is helped a great deal by the latest advancements in computer and recording technology to add in catchy new tunes, such as in Flo Rida’s “Whistle”, and crystal clear music videos with amazing visual effects, like Katy Perry’s “Wide Awake.”
Unarguably, the advancements in technology boosted the quality of all the songs on the toppers list helping with their initial marketing strategy. Afterwards, the lyrics seem to be typically taken from personal experiences of both pain and happiness that most people tend to relate to. This in itself becomes a sales gimmick as it gives people solace and hope for the future. One such song is Coldplay’s “Princess of China” in which the sentimental feelings of the artist are relayed in the song. “Black Heart” by Stooshe is another example of a negative romantic experience relayed in song. Often artists utilize music as a medium to ventilate their feelings and their audience seems to identify with them and create a demand for this genre. Finally, some songs are simply wonderful without all the technical fluff and they just sell themselves without an elaborate marketing strategy or any media hype.
However, “Somebody That I Used To Know” by Gotye had a very melodious tune and the pitch gradation was stellar. Gotye proved to everyone that he is a talented artist without making a marketing ploy or trying to be too mainstream.
