VH1 is producing and airing a biopic, Crazy, Sexy, Cool: The TLC Story. The biopic is on the platinum-selling group TLC and will center on the groups’ lives and their rise to fame.
The group’ consisted of singer Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins, rapper Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes and singer Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas. The group rose to fame after the release of their album, Ooooooohhh… On the TLC Tip. The album made them a success, but it was the release of CrazySexyCool that exceeded 23 million copies worldwide and made them a household name. In April 2002, Lopes was killed in car crash in Honduras.
Keke Palmer will play the role of Chilli. Palmer who is a singer and former Nickelodeon star on True Jackson VP released her first album, So Uncool in 2007. According to Palmer, she has always been a fan of the group and the opportunity to play a role in the film is exciting to her. In an interview with Essence Magazine, Palmer stated that the cast would not do any actual singing and will be choreographed by the group’s original choreographer.
Rapper and singer Lil Mama who was a judge on America’s Best dance Crew will play Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes. Actor and singer Drew Sidora who is known for her role on Disney’s That’s So Raven and the CW’s The Game will play Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins.
Other casts members include, actor Evan Ross as Dallas Austin who produced many of the group’s hit songs and was romantically involved with Thomas and actor Donny Boaz as the group’s manager, Bill Diggins.
Screenwriter Kate Lanier (What’s Love Got To Do With It, Set it Off, Beauty Shop) penned the script for the biopic.
Filming is set to begin in Atlanta in March 2013 and Charles Stone III (Drumline, Paid in Full, Mr. 3000) will direct it.
