Writing papers, throwing a party, cleaning the house…there are plenty of times when you need a specific type of music to get through the day. And when you just don’t have time to deal with commercials or the same loop of songs over and over, nothing beats online radio. Here are the top five stations for whatever you need.
Ah, Pandora. The old standard. It may be the one of the best-known online radio stations, but its popularity is not undeserved. Pandora is perfect for discovering music in a genre you know you like. Plus, with its shuffle and “add variety” features, you can incorporate more of your favorites into one listening session.
Massive music conglomeration IHeartRadio truly has everything. From talk radio to your local station to Pandora-esque genre stations, iheart.com is one of the most extensive online radio stations out there. Bonus: If you listen to participating stations, you might have a chance to win tickets to the incredible IHeartRadio Music Festival.
Though eight tracks themselves may be pretty out-of-date, 8tracks.com is a surprisingly current interactive server for user-made stations. Most stations are organized by mood, whether “good day + sunshine” or “sad + love.”
With it’s direct update to Facebook, now you can see when that huge football player you went to high school with is jamming out to Britney Spears on Spotify. Beyond its convenient correlation to Facebook, Spotify is perfect if you have a specific song or artist you want to hear.
For alternative tastes, you can’t beat SomaFM. Though there are only 20 channels, the variety is incredible (from Underground 80s to Grooove Salad), and you just might find a new favorite song.
